Geometric & Contemporary
Many of our artisan specialize in Geometric designs; intricate repeating patterns that are carved or etched directly into the outside slip of clay that covers the original vase. The precision of their work is amazing given that they are all produced using only simple tools, a steady hand, and an artist’s patience. There are 2 different styles of producing these pots. The “Colochado” process finely etches the vase to produce the design, while “Covado” uses small implements to dig or carve out the geomentric forms. Colochado is a more time consuming process, while Covado is more difficult technically and harder to create uniform patterns. With each method, a mnor slip of the hand can easily ruin a vase. Although these are the most difficult pieces to do well, they are often the most impressive and visually stimulating.
